How many of you think Facebook is a harmless, fabulous website? Well, fabulous maybe; but definitely not harmless.
I sign in to Facebook everyday to be confronted with countless ‘updates’ about my friends and their lives. It would be accurate to say that Facebook would all be about updates as it is a social networking site. However, my home page is filled with ‘updates’ about quiz results and game progresses; updates which I am not very interested in finding out.
I got v lazy scrolling down pages to read actual status updates and gave up. I now view Facebook status updates from tweetdeck! Tweetdeck is extremely convenient as you can link your twitter, facebook and myspace accounts and choose what you want to be displayed in proper neat columns. It helps filter unwanted info so that I save time filtering information manually. For Facebook you can choose to view Full News Feed, Status Updates, Wall Posts, Photos etc so it’s really all about choosing what you want to know. Thumbs up for Tweetdeck for making my life so much simplier! (Although it gets a little irritating at times when the updates are so frequent that there is a little pop-up at the top-hand corner of your screen every few seconds.) You can download Tweetdeck at http://www.tweetdeck.com/beta/download/.
And I recently found out that there isn’t as much privacy on Facebook as I thought there was despite the limited information one can choose to display to non-friends. However, you can required to allow Facebook applications access to all your information before you can use them; which means that every quiz or game that you play/do on FB have access to all your information and even that of your friends. And you’ll never know what they’ll do with your information ‘cos FB has a disclaimer – This application was notdeveloped by Facebook so really it’s a risk that you are taking.
There is also viruses spreading around now on Facebook and Twitter in the form of messages being sent to your inbox for Facebook and direct messages for Twitter. DO NOT click on the links as your computer will be infected. The solution s to change your password. I think the latest version of MSN (also known as Windows Live Messenger) was affected too by this virus, so always change your password regularly as online channels are easily infiltrated by such viruses! The terror of viruses!
/update: Facebook has just revised their privacy policy!
